Shimano MTB Gets Electric with 2015 XTR Di2

Earlier this year, Shimano released the latest version of its top shelf XTR group in 11-speed Race and Trail versions. They were late to the party by  a year and a half and although they released a 1x chainring configuration it was clear that the wizards behind the curtain in Osaka still believe that 2 chainrings up front presents the greatest versatility and performance for most riders. Heck, there’s even still a 3-ring XTR configuration still being offered in the latest group.

Further, their rear cluster range fell shy of the range offered by the competition: 11-40 teeth to SRAM’s 10-42. The new XTR hasn’t hit the market yet, and no one has really ridden it (we’re expecting a test group later this summer), so reception to date has been mixed: front derailleur defenders and detractors alike can agree that the latest XTR will probably set a new standard in drivetrain performance (the new brakes and wheels look impressive also), but it’s still too early to tell how the market will react, let alone Product Managers who now have harder decisions to make when spec’ing high-end bikes.

Shimano introduced their 11-speed XTR group earlier this year to a mixed response. Adding a cog and a 1x solution was a win, but most people wanted to see a rear cassette with a greater range than 11-40 teeth. On the other hand, the consensus is that 2015 XTR will set a new performance standard in MTB drivetrain performance.

XTR Di2, then, is very important for Shimano, even if its price point puts it even more out of the reach of most riders than the mechanical group was already. First, as was the case on the road side with Dura-Ace Di2, they are the first to market in the electronic MTB drivetrain race, and while we know assume SRAM are working on it, we have no idea when that will make it to production. Second, Di2 trickled down on the road side from Dura-Ace to Ultegra, meaning we can assume that XT will also get electrified at some point. That’s probably a few years away but still, it’s coming. Third, it establishes Shimano’s ability to remain ahead of the curve in some areas. Whether it’s an area the market is going to embrace, we cannot yet know.

At the press event in Orange County earlier this year there was a XTR Di2-equipped bike available for a leg-swing. Draped mostly in prototype pieces. it was however still fully functional. It was only a parking lot test, but that was enough to glean a few things. First, the XTR Di2 shifts way more quickly than mechanical XTR, with trademark Shimano accuracy. Also great is that you can select how fast the rear derailleur executes shifts when you hold down the shift paddle (the action is more like a button). And because there’s no cable throw required, those shift paddles are closer than ever to your thumb and forefinger, meaning you can initiate a shift even more quickly than with a cable-actuating shifter.

There are a lot of advantages to an electronic drivetrain: faster shifting, automatic derailleur trimming, less wear on the entire system, and as seen here, shift paddles that sit very close to your thumb and forefinger. The ergonomics of the new shifters are on another level from the already bang-on XTR mechanical shifters.

When you try to screw with it by executing really ambitious front and rear simultaneous shifts, the system sorts it all and spits you out the other end in whatever gear you were trying to get to. Seriously, I tried to mess it up, and I couldn’t. Granted, this was on a perfectly clean bike on flat pavement, but the fact remains: this Di2 business has legs.

Synchronized Shift and the ability to customize your shift maps, and control both derailleurs with one shifter is also really cool, and does address one of the issues with a 2x setup, which is removing a shifter from the left side of the bar. It’s hard to discern the usual pre-production hype from propaganda at this point, but Shimano’s track record with Di2 on the road side coupled with its reputation for releasing new product only when it is absolutely ready for prime time give us hope that once we’re able to test it in earnest, XTR Di2 is going to break new ground in mountain bike drivetrain technology.

If you’re progressive enough to want an electronic drivetrain but trad enough to run two chainrings (or three) and dual shifters, this is what your left-side shifty thingy will look like. Pretty swank, and the parking lot test revealed it has a very easy, super fast action. If forced to run a front shifter, it doesn’t get better than this.

The XTR Di2 Rear derailleur aka RD-M9050. Sensors will keep everything running optimally, reducing drag and noise and preventing unnecessary drivetrain wear, one of the benefits of an electronic drivetrain. Weight is reported to be 289 grams or a 68g penalty over the mechanical version.

The XTR Di2 front derailleur (FD-M9050) actually comes in at 115 grams, or 5g lighter than the mechanical version, despite housing some of the thinking parts that aid with Synchronized Shift, which is what Shimano calls the new ability to control both rear AND front shifts with a single shifter. Synchronized Shifting will be user-programmable, allowing the rider to map their preferences and derailleur behaviors, and will work with 2 and 3 chainring cranksets.

Digital Di2 E-tube electronics allow the inclusion of the handlebar mounted SC-M9050 Display Unit for monitoring important Di2 data: gear selection, battery level and shift mode. The expandable E-tube platform also means that integration with electric-controlled suspension from FOX is a reality.

The Display Unit shows your important data: gear selection, shift mode, and battery life, and lets you change shift modes. It also emits a beep when your next shift will initiate a front derailleur shift if you’re currently in Synchro Shift mode (you can disable it using Manual mode). It uses E-tube wiring ports, meaning it is also compatible for integration with FOX’s spiffy electronic iCD (Intelligent Climb and Descend Modes) system. Currently only offered on the 32 Float FIT iCD fork and Float iCD rear shock, you can bet on FOX releasing an expanded range of iCD compatible products in the future.

Shimano’s XTR M9050 shifting system uses the same E-tube platform introduced with road Di2 groups that is programmable, customizable and allows for expansion and further system integration. Wires are offered in a wide variety of lengths for bikes of all sizes and shapes and cable routing options will connect the various junction points. Unlike traditional cables and housing, wires are not affected by trail and weather conditions, providing consistent performance in this waterproof system.

2015 Shimano XTR Di2 groups are expected to ship in Q4 of 2014. Pricing is yet to be announced.

So if you run out of battery , you can't shift? If it had a solar panel with it that might work, otherwise i can totally see forgetting to check the battery and getting stuck in the worst gear for a whole ride

Sure it is cool, but wow will it be expenseive to replace ! I had the option to go XTR, but went XT, much cheaper to replace the derailleurs and other bits I occasionally break on the Shore.

Cool but front derailleur… in my eyes that's a fail. We need a 11×42 cassette 11 or 10 speed, single ring up front. Come on Shimano WTF are you doing!!!

Well they have now provided an 11×40 11spd cassette. If you ran that with a 28t front you'd be good to go with an all-Shimano 1×11. This is my plan when my current drivetrain needs replacing. Also hoping that they offer the 11spd rear shifter by itself. CRC already lists the M9000 cassette at $256 which means it's still cheaper than XX1.

Most riders are not strong enough to ride 1x. The typical weekend warrior, especially when over 40 years of age without any prior structured training, still needs a 22t ring up front and a 36t at the back to get up the steepest or loosest climbs around (even on the EC without major mountain ranges). I have friends that have been riding for 20+ years and still ride almost exclusively in their 22t ring when the terrain is not flat or starts to get rocky. Even on the local amateur racing scene, half the field in most races needs a 22t or 24t front ring after 2 hours of riding. And the 'racers' are light years ahead of the weekend warriors when it comes to fitness. I think solving the issues with a mechanical front derailleur is an awesome improvement. And I currently ride a 1×11 setup. I just despise mechanical front derailleurs.
Electronic shifting enables synchro shifting which is about the biggest downfall of front derailleurs. When you shift in front, you have to shift at the back. Synchro solves this. And moving front derailleurs are hard (after a long time in the saddle). I for one can't wait to try this out. Just wish they went straight wireless instead of bothering with wires. Hopefully in the US the tech will be rapidly adopted and prices will become more reasonable. The drop in prices and availability of 1×11 in the past year has been incredible.
More than anything, this is another option for riders. It does not have to be liked by all or be the cheapest option available, but it is available.

Oh come now Jerry, I can't afford a Ferrari but they are still cool. From my frinds that have DI2 road, it is a game changer. I think I read recently that Thomson was doing an electronic dropper so rest easy, it's coming soon.

What's the replacement cost of the Display unit when you crash? How much extra weight? Why doesn't someone do an electronic dropper, makes much more sense than shifting. I'm sure dentists will be all over this.
